Chapter 15

November, 1943

Lily would have loved to tell her father the story of how she swiped her hands away from Mr. Tobias’s ruler. In times gone by, Pop would probably have laughed out loud as she described the look on her teacher’s face. He might even have shared a story or two of his own about how he was once punished in school when he was a boy. They would have laughed together over those memories. But as the weeks and months went by in the Hongkew ghetto, laughter began to disappear from Lily’s home along with the opportunity to share stories with Pop. The joy was being sucked out of her parents, leaving them silent and troubled most days. Lily tried to smile in front of them. She wanted to show them that she was young and healthy and could get through anything. But by the time she had lived in the ghetto for six months, even she was beginning to suffer under the difficult conditions there.
